Ick! It's the pee in the pool that causes you to get red eyes when swimming!

Heading to the pool? The CDC recently said eye redness after swimming isn't caused by the chlorine - it is caused by urine in the water.
Michael J. Beach, PhD, associate director of the CDC's Healthy Water Program, explained that chlorine binds with the sweat and urine produced by swimmers and forms chemical irritants. That chemical irritant not only causes eye redness, it is also to blame for the cough many swimmers get from an indoor pool after the chemicals enter the lungs.
Remember even though you're there for fun, you are potentially sharing body fluids with the entire populace.
We have all heard the standard pool rules: No running, No swimming immediately after eating, etc. However, for your health here are some additional rules when swimming in a pool.
Stay healthy and have a wonderful summer!

Sunglasses Improve Your Mood!
We all know that sunglasses can protect our eyes, keep us from squinting and make us look great, but did you know that they can also affect your mood?
Researchers at the University of Chieti- Pescara, Italy found that Beach-goers not wearing sunglasses on a sunny day reported that they felt more angry than people wearing sunglasses. One of the possible reasons given for this is that frowning because of sun glare requires the same facial muscles as frowning when you are angry. We have beautiful sunglasses that can make you look and feel great!

Calcium Supplements and Vision Loss
A new study has linked Calcium supplements to vision loss. Taking more than 800 mg/day of calcium was associated with nearly twice the risk of being diagnosed with age-related macular degeneration, which can cause severe loss of central vision which is essential for reading and driving. The link was found only in patients age 68 and older, but is still under investigation.
Note: Calcium has important benefits for many medical conditions including osteoporosis and high blood pressure. Do not reduce or discontinue use of calcium supplements without speaking to your doctor.
As more information becomes available on this subject, as always we will keep you informed.

Technology Is All Around Us - and So Is Harmful Blue Light
Americans on average spend over half their waking hours in front of digital screens such as computers, smartphones, tablets and televisions. These devices emit high-energy blue light which has been shown to cause a number of health risks including eye strain, fatigue, disruption of the sleep cycle and early onset of age-related macular degeneration.
There are new advances that can protect you from blue light emissions. BluTech protection is the newest technology to protect your eyes. Come see us for more information on this and other advances in eye care. Our next newsletter will have more information on how blue light emissions affect your sleep! |
