Our Practice
Our practice was founded the same year as the city of Garden grove, 1956, by Dr. Sheldon S. Singer. At that time, Garden Grove was an agricultural community, characterized by sprawling orange groves and strawberry fields, hence it's name. Dr. Singer was from Ohio, served in the military during the war, and was stationed in Southern California, falling in love with the area. He then went to Ohio State University to obtain his Doctor of Optometry degree on the GI bill and returned to So Cal to practice.
The original office was in a shopping center at Brookhurst St. and Chapman Ave. and Dr. Singer rapidly gained a reputation as an innovator. He was one of the first in the area to fit contact lenses, only the hard ones were available then, and even purchased the lathes to make them at night for his patients in his own office.
Always a community volunteer, Dr. Singer was involved in the early years of the Strawberry Festival, the Boys Club of Garden Grove, past President of the Chamber of Commerce, the Kiwaniis club and was a driving force in founding the weekly Sunday Main Street Organic Farmers Market in Garden Grove that still exists today.
In 1979 he and some friends built an office building at 12620 Brookhurst that housed the practice for the next 25 years. Again our practice had a reputation of embracing the future with one of the first business computer systems, a Wang unit that was 5 feet by 4 feet, used one-foot square floppy disks to conduct a backup in 2 hours and held less information than one days worth of your spam emails! We were the first office in Garden Grove to offer disposable contact lenses in 1988 and have continuously conducted pre-market FDA contact lens studies for major contact lens manufacturers.
Dr. Miller joined the practice one day a week in 1983 and within three months was offered a partnership, practicing with Dr. Singer until his retirement in 1990. A life-long volunteer herself, she was happy to serve the community and continues along the path set by her mentor as a past-President of the Strawberry Festival (still a member of the board of directors since 1989) and the Boys and Girls Club (currently a member of the board of directors since 1984).

In 2004, an even more exciting opportunity to give back to the community of Garden Grove became available. It was time to expand the practice and the historic building we occupy today had fallen into disrepair. Having always adored the historic Main Street area, Dr. Miller accepted the challenge of restoring 12966 Main Street to our beautiful office space. Adding skylights and colorful accents, as well as having to gut the interior to add electrical, plumbing, efficient heating and cooling systems, she rescued a piece of Garden Grove history.
Patients who have been lifelong residents of Garden Grove tell us that over the years our building has been a bicycle shop, a tire store, a beauty supply store, an antique furniture restoration business, and an antique store and florist shop. We look forward to seeing you in our office!
